Braces & Sports

It is critical to protect your smile while you're playing sports!   One-third of all dental injuries are sports related!   Keep those beauitful smiles safe and use a mouthguard!

Non-collision sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, gymastics, and volleyball are also at risk for oral injury.  So, it is important that these players were mouthguards, too!

Mouthguards can prevent more than 200,000 oral injuries each year!

Types of mouthguards

There are three basic types of mouthguards: the pre-made mouthguard, "boil-and-bite" fitted mouthguard, and a custom-made mouthguard from your orthodontist or dentist.

Select a mouthguard that is tear-resistant, comfortable, well fitted for your mouth, and easy to breathe with.

Mouthguards for orthodontic patients

Since your teeth are moving, orthodontic patients are NOT good candidates for boil-and-bite mouthguards.  You need to select a mouthguard that is designated for orthodontic appliances.

Taking care of your mouthguard

  • Clean your mouthguard after each use with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Store your mouthguard in a protective case.
  • Do not leave it in the sun or in hot water, as it may deform.
  • Replace your mouthguard at the beginning of every new sports season.
  • Replace your mouthguard if you notice it has become worn and no longer fits properly.
  • Do not wear a retainer with your mouthguard.
  • Do not chew on or cut pieces off of your mouthguard.
  • You may bring your mouthguard to your appointment and Dr. Jones will check it for you.
