Life with Braces

Tips for your New Braces

Discomfort

When you first get your orthodontic appliance, you may notice that your teeth and mouth feel a little tender or sore. This is perfectly normal and we promise your mouth will not be sore forever!

Salt Water Rinse  Dissolve one teaspon of salt in warm water.  Swish, gargle, and then spit.

Pain Reliever  Orthodontic discomfort may be relieved by over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen or Tylenol.  Please take as directed.

Wax  Lips, cheeks, and your tongue may be irritated for 1-2 weeks until they toughen up.  Use the wax that we provided.  If you run out, we've got more for you!  You can also pick up wax from pharmacies or stores like Target.

Loose Teeth

If your teeth begin feeling a little loose, don't worry; this is normal!  Once your teeth have been repositioned, they will no longer be loose.

Loose Wires and Braces

Damaged appliances can increase the length of your treatment process, so call us as soon as you notice if something is damaged.

Sports and Braces

If you play sports, you should wear a mouthguard.   If you're in the process of orthodontic treatment, do NOT use a boil-and-bite mouthguard, rather use a mouthguard for braces.

In case of a sports emergency, please contact our office right away.
